What Students Are Saying

Many M.A. in Sport & Athletic Administration (MASAA) students are passionate about sharing their personal stories about the impact the MASAA program has had on their careers and on their lives.

 Kenneth Halpin

KenHalpin2“The greatest value I received from this program was the development and growth it contributed to my personal and professional network.  I can credit every job I’ve had in some way to the network I developed while at GU.  I am continually keeping in touch with my fellow classmates and past professors.  The educational experience was excellent, but the single greatest asset from this program was the influence it had on my personal and professional network.”

– Kenneth Halpin, MA, PhD, Athletic Director, Winthrop University| Alumnus, 2008

Q: Did you take the online or on-campus MASAA program?

A: On Campus

Q: What made you decide to choose Gonzaga?

A: I was looking for a sport management program in the Northwest.  Gonzaga’s academic reputations combined with their prominence as a basketball school was really appealing.  I was also intrigued about the opportunity to receive a Graduate Assistant position.

Q: How has the program changed you personally and professionally?

A: The greatest value I received from this program was the development and growth it contributed to my personal and professional network.  I can credit every job I’ve had in some way to the network I developed while at GU.  I am continually keeping in touch with my fellow classmates and past professors.  The educational experience was excellent, but the single greatest asset from this program was the influence it had on my personal and professional network.

Q: What would you say to your peers about this program?

A: For future students, GU MASAA alumni are a close network.  I would say yes to any opportunity to help a fellow GU graduate and I know my peers would feel the same.  A decision to pursue your MA in Sport and Athletic Administrations is a decision to join a supportive network comprised of athletic administrators of future generations.

Ashley Blake

ashleyblaketestimonial“Gonzaga’s values line up with my personal outlook, and the mission of the University was woven into every assignment and project we worked on. The MASAA Program took a holistic approach—Professors focus on developing you both in and outside of the classroom. They prepared us not only to graduate and get jobs, but also to use our education to serve our community.”

Q: What is your current job and location?

A: Director of Sports Development, Spokane Sports Commission in Spokane, WA

The Spokane Sports Commission is non-profit organization charged with bringing Sporting events to Spokane County to create an economic impact. Each event brings athletes, coaches, and fans to our community who help our local economy by spending money on hotels, restaurants, entertainment, retail, and recreation.

I am part of the development team at the Sports Commission.  We work with Event Rights Holder (NCAA, USA Gymnastics, US Tennis Association, etc.) and their local affiliates to bring championship events to Spokane. I research, identify, bid and negotiate with Rights Holders on behalf of the city.  Each year, we host 60+ championship events bringing more than $40 Million in economic impact to our region.

Q: What made you decide to choose Gonzaga?

A: I attended a small, private, Liberal Arts School for Undergrad, and had a great experience. When I started evaluating Graduate Schools, I was looking for a similar experience—small class size, personal connection with professors and staff, and a school with a strong tie to the community. I also thought it was important to get a degree in Sport Management from a school with a strong athletic program.

I was looking for a program that would attract top-tier classmates that I could learn from and who would contribute to my overall educational experience. Gonzaga has high academic standards, which I knew would attract top applicants.

Gonzaga’s values line up with my personal outlook, and the mission of the University was woven into every assignment and project we worked on. The MASAA Program took a holistic approach—Professors focus on developing you both in and outside of the classroom. They prepared us not only to graduate and get jobs, but also to use our education to serve our community.

Q: What would you say to your peers about this program?

A: The Gonzaga Community gives you everything you need to succeed. It is up to you to seize  opportunities and pave your own path. Come into the program focused, committed and passionate.

Treat the program like a networking opportunity. You will rely on your classmates, Professors, and community heavily as you enter the work force.

Josh Cox

joshcoxtestimonial“The program was very beneficial to learn what the most up to date guidelines and criteria are that are put in place within certain industries and regarding facilities.  There are also a number of issues that take place on a constant basis that are good class discussions. It helped me widen my pool of contacts and connections within the sports industry.”
