Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media
A Regional Center for Excellence in Media Literacy
The Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media (NW-ARM) was created in partnership between Gonzaga’s M.A. Communication & Leadership Program and University of Washington.
The NW-ARM believes that media is one of the single most powerful influences that shapes our attitudes, values and beliefs as well as the behaviors of our children, families and communities.
In recognizing the power of media (such as television, newsprint and internet) to influence our culture, we believe that this power requires a corollary responsibility of stewardship.
This ensures not only continued growth and creativity of the industry’s product but also a constructive public introspection of the effects of this product on a healthy and vibrant community.
The Department of Communication and Leadership Studies and The School of Professional Studies at Gonzaga University are the home for the Center for Media Literacy Excellence. The Center carries on the work of the Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media.
The Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media is committed to monitoring the influence of news and entertainment media on our society, educating the community about this influence, and working with media professionals to influence the industry to act responsibly in helping create a thriving cultural environment for all.
We envision a community that:
- Understands the effect of media on our community and culture.
- Works with media to enhance the vitality and development of our community.
- Empowers youth and adults to become critical media consumers.
- Encourages media to act as responsible, effective stewards of this critical public trust.
